Red Velvet (레드벨벳)

Russian Roulette is a massive hit from 2016. It has a nice 1980's game/chip tune vibe and a beautifully produced video (with >160M views) where, as is common to many of their videos, they are trying to harm one another. Cartoon inspiration is from Itchy & Scratchy. Written by Jo Yoon-Kyung (조윤경), arranged by Albi Albertsson, Belle Humble & Markus Lindell: Spotify YouTube.
This fixed-camera live performance shows how great the dance routine is (although annoyingly the video is 250ms ahead of the audio): YouTube.

Umpah Umpah was released in Aug 2019. (From Avni-Sharma 'Umpah umpah' comes from when Koreans first learn to swim and try to hold their breath underwater. They practice regular breathing by saying 'um' as they inhale and 'pah' as they exhale. The song lyrics have a swimming theme and tell someone who falls in love with their eyes and charms to breathe.) Writer Jeon Gan Di, composition+arrangement Christoffer Lauridsen, Andreas Oberg & Allison Kaplan: Spotify YouTube.

#CookieJar was released in June 2018 for the Japanese market and is sung in Japanese. This is one hell of a bop - even my wife danced to this and she hates K-pop. (Song+lyrics by MEG.ME, arranged by many people!): Spotify YouTube.
Sappy: This song has a good solid chugg of a rhythm throughout. Another one for the Japanese market, sung in Japanese: Spotify YouTube.
Sassy Me: Lovely vocal harmonies, particularly by Wendy at 1:28: Spotify YouTube.
Peek-A-Boo: Great song with a somewhat sinister video: Spotify

Sunny Side Up: Yet another great song. Love Wendy's line 'Dont Make My Mind All Scrambled Up' at 2:33: Spotify YouTube.
Rebirth Another song that the more you listen to it, the more you appreciate it. Bizarre but cute video: Spotify YouTube.
Would U: A lovely song reminiscent of ABBA. Video features Irene: Spotify YouTube.
Red Flavour Really upbeat song and video: Spotify YouTube.
Psycho: Chilling melody and pre-chorus. Chorus is OK and does grow on you. Beautiful video: Spotify YouTube.
Queendom: Their first release for a while after Covid19-21. I initially thought this was a bit lacklustre but how wrong I was; the chorus is so good that it'll have you replaying the song over and over again. Wendy's vocal overlays from 2:35 onwards are something else altogether. The video is the typically nutty Red Velvet style but a pleasure to watch and the dance sections are simple, cute and tight. Pose: Another good song from the Queendon album. Spotify YouTube.

Other highly rated songs: Power UP, Jumpin, Carpool, Knock On Wood.

Also don't forget Wendy's solo album Like Water, my favourite song is Why Can't You Love Me Spotify.

More to come...
